Get a body like Coleen’s    ·    January 2nd, 2008

Coleen McLoughlin, Elise Lindsay, Personal Trainer

We’ve watched Coleen McLoughlin blossom from a shy tracksuit-wearing schoolgirl to the UK’s favourite style icon.

But her new toned physique isn’t just down to lucky genes.

Coleen has learnt celebrity body secrets from her personal trainer Elise Lindsay.
A-list posture

Celebrities look great on the red carpet because they know how to work their bodies for the camera.

Coleen’s trick is to stand with one hand on her hip and her weight on her back foot.

To get great celeb posture, follow the 30 per cent rule Coleen swears by.

Draw your stomach into your spine by 100 per cent, then again to 70 per cent, then 50 and finally 30 per cent. Then hold this position every day.

It’s almost like wearing a Victorian corset, with your muscles working to give you extra support when you move.

Increase the percentage whenever you need it more – so if you’re lifting shopping bags increase it to 50 per cent.

Now every time you get dressed, pretend your clothes as your ‘best outfit’ as you pose in the mirror. As you gradually hold a better posture, you’ll notice the difference.

Another tip is to go ‘naked shopping’!

When you are next out, imagine you’re in your underwear. It will make you correct your posture immediately.

You’ll have to concentrate at first but as your body adapts it will become automatic.

Eat out, celeb style

Celebrities like Coleen don’t just stick to their healthy eating regime at home – they take their food plan out to dinner too.

It’s very easy to consume more calories than you intended at a restaurant.

Just the side order of bread and butter can tot up the numbers.

The key is to ask the chef to adapt a dish to suit your needs.

Try asking for a sauce or salad dressing to be served separately – that way you can choose how much to have.

Ask for extra veg instead of potatoes and question how the meat or fish is cooked.

It’s easy to ask for it to be steamed or grilled rather than fried.

You can make clever menu choices too.

Opt for tomato-based sauces rather than cream ones, choose boiled rice over fried rice and avoid pepperoni on pizza, because it’s quite a fatty meat.

Star body types

It’s a good idea to base your workout level on your body shape, of which there are three different types: endomorph, ectomorph and mesomorph.

No-one is 100 per cent one of these body shapes - we are a mixture of body-shape characteristics although one type is normally dominant.

If you’re a Mesomorph like Madonna you’ll have a muscular body with broad shoulders and a fast metabolism.

Varied types of fitness including moderate weights are best for you, but don’t overdo it.

An Ectomorph such as Tara Palmer-Tomkinson has a light, narrow build, low body fat percentage and very quick metabolism.

Your main aim should be increasing muscle using weights, rather than too much aerobic activity. Increase your calorie intake by eating more healthy food.

While Endomorphs like Vanessa Feltz tend to have a round build with big bones and often have high percentages of body fat.

They need to keep active, with regular cardio and strength exercise to help reduce fat and tone muscle.

Eat small, frequent meals and avoid fat and sugar.
